In a world of bright lights...

...it's green that stands out.
Ricoh, an office solution company is making a statement in the middle of Time's Square. With more and more corporations looking towards sustainability and feeling the momentum of the "going green" movement, it's cool to see what companies are doing to send the message. There is much that companies are and can continue to do to help save this world we live in. This is a really cool example. Ricoh's billboard in the middle of Time's Square is self-sustained by 16 wind turbines and 64 solar panels. It is estimated to save thousands of dollars on electricity, and will keep 18 tons of carbon out of the atmosphere per year.

From an advertising perspective...risky business, because what if at this time of the year where there is little sun, and if by chance the winds die down? A representative from Ricoh basically said, "That's alright," because they are sending a message about what their brand values.

That to me is pretty cool. I love corporations that really take an interest in the environment and the effect they have on the world around them (that's probably the Hawaiian in me). There are a lot of companies doing it...Marriott has done some amazing things with their hotels, IBM just launched a new campaign about how it can help companies go green in terms of computer networks and such.

One company to note I think is SHARP. SHARP is the leading company in solar panel technology. In 2006, they created the largest roof mounted system in the world on their own manufacturing facility and have plans for a new solar panel facility in 2009. (for more info go to www.lifechangingbox.com).

I love seeing companies that really make something meaningful part of their brand, and actually do something about it. Any other companies of the same nature that you feel I should research?

What about Shea Homes - Trilogy? First builder to go solar as included in all new homes? Yeah. . . . ok, we aren't on the same level yet. :)

The way the wind blows at our workplace, we should seriously look into wind power.

16 wind turbines and 64 solar panels? If you ask me, if you have to use that much energy just to send an advertisement, you aren't being very green or conserving energy. Imagine how un-green they had to be to produce to wind turbines and solar panels

I think it's great that they are making the statement. Many times it takes companies like Ricoh to make such a statement (even if in the end it wasn't all that green) to allow others to keep the ball rolling for real effectiveness.
. . . I also hope to one day have my home either totally or dang close to self-sufficiency. Thanks for sharing Kev.
